I was browsing through it, and found so many new and great applications.

Some of them were Hydrogen (some kind of audio mixing tool for guitarists), a couple of tools like FruityLoops, a lot of tweaks and shortcut apps for doing varied jobs, like KCleanup to remove unwanted files, etc etc.

Another one was RSIBreak. Its a tool that helps people like me. Generally working continuously on the computer can cause so many problems. It keeps running in the background and after a scheduled amount of time, it asks the user to take a break. There are two types of breaks, a short break (for me its after every 10 mins, for 20 seconds) and a long break (for 3 mins after every hour). It looks for keyboard and mouse activity when its break time, and resets to 20 seconds or 3 mins if it detects activity. IF the user keeps working, after 3 activity detection events, it locks the system and freezes. The user has the option of 'skipping' the break or 'logging off', but I think most users will then at least stand up, and stretch instead of taking off the break signal. Really cool thing for those who stress a lot. RSI means Repetetive Strain Injury, and this app is to prevent that.

I also came to know that my KOffice contains a nice component called Kivio. Its the same thing as MS Visio. I just opened it and was amazed to find the same interface and functionality. Really cool app and a good answer to people who keep telling me to make them count a replacement of Visio in Linux. Cheers!

KDE and Cricket scorecard...

I was just seeing the scorecard in the India-Pakistan match. I wondered whether I could help out my browser from those refreshes. I wasn't seeing each and every line of the commentry, so why not have something better, like a desktop scorecard, but a little less annoying.

I wrote a script that will SPECIFICALLY give me a live scorecard of TODAY's CRICKET MATCH. To upgrade the existing version, it requires a painful download of too many RPMs, manually!

Here is a script to help the cause!

* Just create a new folder, say 'kde-3.5.1' and copy this script, say 'download.sh' into that.
* Create a directory 'kde-3.5.1/rpms'.
* cd kde-3.5.1
* chmod 755 download.sh
* ./download.sh

and you can even run this script 2-3-4-5-6 times at the same time in different shells, so that this script downloads the rpms intelligently, i.e. they cooperatively download all data! then try to install the rpms. if some rpms got corrupt, delete them and run the script to redownload. Play and Pause, Previous, Next, Stop, etc? I always wished my keyboard is able to do the same in KDE too.

I use AMAROK player, so, I generally want my amarok to play or pause audio. In the control center, there is a section called Regional and accessibility/KHotKeys

Here, we can add events and their actions. By default, there are two groups of events, "examples" and "menu editor entries". First, I created a new group, "Amarok commands". In that group, I added a new action. I named the new action as "amarok play pause". Now, I added a new trigger as "shortcut", and in that, I specified the "play pause multimedia key" (to specify, just press the key, hehe). And specified the action as "command/URL" and in that "amarok -t". Now, after applying, pressing "the play pause multimedia key "plays pauses" amarok.

To find out the command for your media player, generally,
{player name} --help
tells you which commands are for what.

amarok -t // play pause
amarok -s // stop
amarok -r // previous
amarok -f // next

Also, it is important to note that there was a mapping called "XF86AudioPlay" for the keycode of "play pause multimedia key". So, its important to select the correct "keyboard model" from Control Center -> Regional and Accessibility -> Keyboard Layout. For me, the model is "Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro/Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro".

If your layout doesn't have a mapping, then, we can always use "xmodmap" to select an "unused mapping" for the "key". Some of the other unused "mapping codes" are F13 F14 F15 F16, etc. if your F keys are till F12 only.

Have fun!

Making the "Multimedia keys" work

Normally, we have keyboards which have more than the normal keys. But, the general view is "Linux doesn't support the extra keys". True to some extent, it really doesn't support all keys. But, there are a few keys which are detected by Linux, but it doesn't know how to deal with them. Its something like, Linux detects the "electronic signal" generated by these keys, but it doesn't have a mapping of the "signal" and "its name".

We can specify this mapping and use those extra "signals" as keys. Every key generates a "signal" or a "keycode". The command "xev" tells us the "keycode" of the key pressed.

Just run "xev" on konsole and press 'a', the output is...

KeyPress event, serial 30, synthetic NO, window 0x2200001,
root 0x40, subw 0x0, time 655687, (270,-143), root:(274,365),
state 0x0, keycode 38 (keysym 0x61, a), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (61) "a"
XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (61) "a"
XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyRelease event, serial 30, synthetic NO, window 0x2200001,
root 0x40, subw 0x0, time 655780, (270,-143), root:(274,365),
state 0x0, keycode 38 (keysym 0x61, a), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (61) "a"

Here we see that it says, the keycode is '38'. Linux has a mapping of 38 means 'a'. Now, if I press "My Documents" button, this is what I see.

KeyRelease event, serial 30, synthetic NO, window 0x2200001,
root 0x40, subw 0x0, time 720180, (221,-246), root:(225,262),
state 0x0, keycode 239 (keysym 0xfed0, First_Virtual_Screen), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:

This says that it has a signal of 239, but no "mapping".
We can specify mapping by creating a text file with the format
keycode {keycode} = {mapping}

The mapping is some string which identifies a key. There are some defined "mappings" which we can use. They are in the file, /usr/X11R6/include/X11/keysymdef.h

The known signals are already mapped to some code in that file. Like 22 is mapped to BackSpace. But, some of them like "XK_Next_Screen" are not mapped. We can use these "free codes" to map the new signals of our extra keys.

Hence, we can find the keycode of our extra key with "xev" and create a file,
~/.Xmodmap

and write something like...
keycode 239 = First_Virtual_Screen
keycode 237 = Next_Virtual_Screen
keycode 236 = Last_Virtual_Screen

Now, if we run "xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap, these new mappings get registered till we don't restart X. So, we need to automate the running of this command on startup.

In KDE, open konqueror, GO->Autostart. Create new link to application, and type the execution command as "xmodmap .Xmodmap". Now, it will work even after restarting X.

Also, first select the correct Keyboard Model in Control Centre->Regional and Accesibility->Keyboard Layout. If you do this, some of the extra keys "automatically" start working.

Have fun!

Some great effects in KDE

Control Center -> Desktop -> Window Behavior -> Translucency.

This thing is a new feature in KDE which I discovered. It is under "experimentation" and does work a little "buggily". I enabled it. It gets enabled once you enable it and relogin to KDE.

The shadows and translucency are really buggy in resizing, moving and maximizing windows. But, the Effects -- Fade in and Fade out are really nice. Though, that means a little delay in application response, but its really nice. I disabled some advanced effects of the "KDE Theme" I was using, and enabled this effect. Looks great.

You might consider ticking "disable ARGB windows", I don't know what it does though.

Now, when I open a Window, it fades in and fades out, something like given in the "Tour Windows XP" thing, never seen it happen in real working Windows XP though.

Logitech QuickCam Notebook Pro

Logitech QuickCam Notebook Pro. This piece of hardware worked flawlessly when I used some kernel 2.6.10 in Fedora Core 2. But, ever since I installed Fedora Core 4, it didn't work.

I explored for the reason, and found this answer,
"The linux kernel has stopped supporting philips webcam driver, as it was not released under GPL"
Just because the driver wasn't open source, it was removed from the kernel, and poor users like me were helpless.

Exploring a little more, I came to know that the driver consisted of two parts, PWC and PWCX. While PWC was open source, PWCX was not. So, there was sourcecode of PWC, which could be compiled and installed to support my hardware.

After some searching, I reached http://www.saillard.org/linux/pwc/RPMs/. Here, I found some RPMS for the kernel module for PWC driver. As my kernel was not listed, I downloaded pwc-10.0.6a-1.src.rpm.

Now, the task was simple, just compile and install.
rpm -hiv pwc*.rpm
cd /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/
rpmbuild -bb pwc.spec
cd /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/
rpm -hiv kernel-modules-pwc*.rpm

It got installed correctly. Then, I plugged in the CAM, and run xawtv. But, unfortunately, the output was a blank window. I could not understand why it happened.

I tried to investigate the contents of the rpm.
$ rpm2cpio kernel-modules-pwc_2.6.12-1.1398_FC4smp-10.0.6a-1_fc4.i386.rpm | cpio -t
./lib/modules/2.6.12-1.1398_FC4smp
./lib/modules/2.6.12-1.1398_FC4smp/misc
./lib/modules/2.6.12-1.1398_FC4smp/misc/pwc.ko
$ cd /lib/modules/2.6.12-1.1398_FC4smp/
$ find . -name *pwc*
./misc/pwc.ko
./kernel/drivers/usb/media/pwc
./kernel/drivers/usb/media/pwc/pwc.ko

Then, I realized that the RPM is actually putting the driver in the misc directory of kernel modules, while its using the one in kernel/drivers/usb/media/pwc/. I just did,
$ cd /lib/modules/2.6.12-1.1398_FC4smp/
$ cp misc/pwc.ko kernel/drivers/usb/media/pwc/
Overwrite file 'pwc.ko' ? y

And now, it worked!! So anyone of you, with this hardware and a 2.6.x kernel, do what I did and be happy. Cheers.

VMWARE .. the middle path.

Nowadays, Operating System has become a religion. And people tend to stick to one. Any good feature in the other cannot be used then, or people keep a dual boot. VMWARE is the solution to all problems.

I downloaded VMware-workstation-5.0.0-13124.i386.rpm from some unknown site. And did...
rpm -hiv VM*.rpm

then, in konsole as root..
vmware-config.pl
installed VMWARE in a suitable partition/(folder in /) and then, run VMWARE.

Here, one thing which is required is, you should enable networking for your guest OSs and also enable NAT support. All this is done in the config thing, and this can be run multiple times, based on any requirement to change anything.

If it tells you that your gcc version is different from what its now, take it VERY seriously. It is strictly required to have the same version of GCC as the kernel is compiled with while configuring VMWARE.

When you run VMWARE, it tells you to add a new Virtual Machine. I added a Microsoft Window XP Professional Machine and asked it to save it on a separate folder on a partition which had enough space. Here, you need to specify how big the harddisk will "appear" to the guest OS. I specified 6 GB. You can also have a lazy allocation, which means you need not have 6GB free, and is allocated as required. This degrades the perfomance a little. So, I asked it to allocate the entire 6GB thing.

And now, I specified it to put the ISO image of Windows XP SP2 Setup CDROM in the CDROM device of the guest OS. It installed just like it does. And worked just like it does. I installed NAV2005 in the system, so that no viruses come. Network is configured to be "automatically detect the IP" and I specified the DNS manually (as we generally do in our college network).

To share data between the OSs, you can use the conventional WinSCP, or there is an option of shared folders in VMWARE. You share the folders of the host (and also specify "write" permissions), and then you can access them in Windows XP as
\\.host\Shared Folders

These can also get mounted as a "mapped network drive". Its really fun. Now, I have the power of Linux, and for some thing which IS good in Win, I can switch VMWARE on.

The VMWARE Guest OSs can SUSPEND themselves just like "hibernate" thing. And thus take 3 seconds rather than 1 minute to boot an entire XP machine. Really great.

If you are running a sound server in Linux, there is problem running it. One option is to switch off the sound server till you are running VMWARE. (which apparently gives the best performance possible). Second option is to tell VMWARE to access your sound server, which is slow, cranky, has no mixer control, but alas, it works!

Install this for doing that..
http://platan.vc.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/vmwaredsp-1.3.tar.gz

And download this 'crack' and enter the serial number (without any username,email) given in zwt.nfo. This will allow NON-ROOT users to use VMWARE easily. If you already have an operating system installed as ROOT, just do chown user: -R {OS folder} to let the user use it.
http://flz.anycracks.com/zxcvbnm/V/vmwareworkstationv5.0.0.13124linuxkeygenz.w.t.zip

Note: It is illegal to use cracks. These links are for your own convinience. Use them at your own risk. The author is not responsible for any of your actions.

Also, you can get VMWARE for Windows (as host) here...
http://download3.vmware.com/software/wkst/VMware-workstation-5.0.0-13124.exe

When you install an OS completely, click on "VM->Install VMWARE tools" when your OS is completely logged on. This will trigger an install shield just like the install shield of "intel motherboard CDROM" and install the necessary "VMWARE drivers". This will then allow you to increase the resolution to a better value, etc.

I beg you all to choose the MIDDLE PATH, and have the HOST OS as the one which you 'generally' prefer. Something like, love your own religion, but respect others too.

SWAP!

The swap space is actually some space on the hard disk which Linux uses to cope with "RAM shortage" problems. The processes not required in the RAM are swapped out of the RAM into the DISK. Definitely, if there is space in the RAM, no process should ever go to swap. But, this happened, and about 190 MB of swap was being used, even when I have 350 MB of RAM empty.

Here is the cure..
swapoff -a
swapon -a

It switches off the use of swap and back again, and so, the entire swap is emptied into the RAM, making it normal again. Poor me rebooted instead of doing this. Again, it got reestablised, Linux doesn't need reboots, ever!

There is variable /proc/sys/vm/swappiness is a file which contains a value between 1 and 100, which defines how will kernel behave in swapping, how much and when will it swap. Read some site to know more. I heard "reducing" the value makes it use the swap space less. Its not recommended though to make it ZERO.

KDocker is nice!

I am not able to use Gaim these days because of the network problems. So, I have to use the silly Yahoo Messenger for Linux. It doesn't even know how to go into the system tray. No problemo! I can make it do that. Just go to www.pbone.net and look for kdocker. Install the one matching with the architechture, or which is the closest to it. I installed.. kdocker-1.3-0.1.3.kde.i386.rpm. Now, I can write "kdocker" in RUN and click on a Window, and it goes into the taskbar. Can be done with my yahoo messenger, my terminal, firefox even! Is really cool :)

Reliance FWP Internet in FC4

Setting up Internet using Reliance FWP is jus a cake walk ...

 These are the steps that need to be followed

Check out whether you have wvdial software installed in your system. For FC4 it is automatically installed, so no issues..

Check in which serial port you have attached the modem (ie WFP) Normally it is ttyS0 or ttyS1
So, no yahoo, no chat.. and a lot of time! Just keep playing with the system.

I was looking at some p2p network sharing software. I found two excellent softwares, DCGUI and LIMEWIRE. DCGUI is a client for Direct Connect protocol based networks and Limewire connects to Gnutella network. But then, this new thing, Enlightenment kept me wanting to explore more, customize it and make it easy. So, I explored more...

yum install entangle e_utils

Then, I typed,
enlightenment_remote -module-load engage

And then, there was a new panel for me, which could have icons and supported the system tray. We can edit it using 'entangle'. To delete an icon, just middle click it. To add a new icon, drag-n-drop from the list given on the left, simple isn't it? No. To find out an icon for "konsole" from the list on the left, it took me 5 mins, and I am still looking for 'kaffeine', hehe.

There is a run command which apparently appeared after installing e_utils.
We can use e_util_eapp_edit <app name> to create our custom application links, but I don't know how it works.

When I run gaim, engage, the panel, shows it in the system tray, so thats now something familiar, hehe. I am trying to get some new themes into it and trying to learn to create a shortcut for my applications. So, I looked up the yum repository for it and added it. Then, just run yumex to install enlightenment and the dependencies.

Started off well, it was a new environment, not very fine in the functionality but it beats Windows Vista lookwise. So much configurable look, but hardly could I put my favorite icons on its panel(so called IBar). Its difficult to terminate programs and to run konsole, you need to run konqueror and then run konsole. There is no run command and kill is very buggy. Killed windows keep popping up and its overall difficult to handle it.

I am back into my KDE, but I'll keep experimenting as an when I get more time.

Another useful package on www.pbone.net is gnome-yum-fedora-repositories-0.1-1.ta.28.fc4.i386.rpm. This installs all the required repositories which needed to be installed manually into the various .repo files. Quite handy for those lazy ones!

Java on Fedora Core....

Did you try installing JDK on FC4? It doesn't work. First of all, FC4 comes with its own javac and java, so you should keep in mind that you don't install the java RPM from the sun's site. You should download the self extracting .bin file.

When you run it as root, after
chmod 755 *.bin
ofcourse, it gives and error that the graphical user interface could not be started. It is NOT a problem of xhost or anything, so no need to try out that way. Its all because of SELinux... SECURITY ENHANCED LINUX. You need to do just this much.
reboot
press E at grub..
press E at the kernel line..
append selinux=off at the end of the kernel line..
press enter..
goto the root line..
press b..

You can also add it into your /etc/grub.conf for permanently doing it. Then the jdk setup along with netbeans works just fine.

There is another editor called eclipse which is prebuilt into FC4. After you install JDK, WTK2.2, you can install eclipseME from http://www.eclipseme.org/ and then follow their instructions to add J2ME support to eclipse. I couldn't understand how to create a J2ME project in it, so I used the familiar Netbeans with its add-on Mobility pack.

Happy Java!

yumEX .... unbelievable!!

Okay, here is a problem which I didn't solve which makes our life much easier. It is mentioned that yumex is a GUI interface for YUM. But, somehow it didn't just work. I use a internet connection behind a proxy, so a lot of applications fail to work. So I thought, so did yumEX(yum extender).

now, I did...
yum install yumex
to install it...
then.....

yumex -n
(to load it without refreshing the package list)
and then type ....
http://192.168.36.204:8080/"
in preferences->proxy. Please note that the "http://" is very important and it doesn't make it intuitively run if you just type the URL or the ip address. As you all know, I shifted from FC2 to FC4, the permissions of the database as well as the database got erased, err...was so silly of me to not back it up.

Anyways, I wanted to create and set up the permission back to normal. So I started the service mysql and made it run by default from
system-config-services

Then, I opened a konsole as root and typed mysql to get into its shell prompt.
{create commands to create all the required databases and tables}
use mysql
delete from user where user='';
insert into user(host,user,password) values("hostname","username",password("password")); //create a password protected account
insert into user(host,user) values("hostname","username"); // open account
quit
service mysqld restart
mysql
grant all on {dbname}.* to 'username'@'hostname';
.
.
.
quit
service mysqld restart

This way I granted the permissions 'all' of some databases to my apache so that the websites can process queries of my websites, and also granted some of the users permissions to access some of the databases.

The main thing to note down is that most of the times you make a change, mysql doesn't start using it, so if you experience problems, each time you make one change, you should exit mysql shell and then restart the mysqld service.

To log in to a mysql shell as the current user, you need to type
mysql -p // if you created a password protected account.
mysql -u {username} -p // to log on as a different password protected user.
mysql // to logon into your own open account
mysql -u {username} // someone elses open account

And still going strong.....

Well, Fedora Core 4 is working as fine as ever. Then, I just undid everything I had done till then, and added these yum repositories by making these files....

/etc/yum.repos.d/dag.repo
-------------------------
[dag]
name=Dag RPM Repository for Fedora Core
baseurl=http://apt.sw.be/fedora/$releasever/en/$basearch/dag/
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1

/etc/yum.repos.d/dries.repo
---------------------------
[dries]
name=Extra Fedora rpms dries - $releasever - $basearch
baseurl=http://ftp.belnet.be/packages/dries.ulyssis.org/fedora/linux/$releasever/$basearch/dries/RPMS/
mirrors=http://apt.sw.be/dries/fedora/fc4/$basearch/dries/RPMS/
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1

/etc/yum.repos.d/freshrpms.repo
--------------------------------
[core]
name=FreshRPMS-Core
baseurl=http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/$releasever/$basearch/core
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
#[extras]
#name=Fedora Linux $releasever - $basearch - extras
#baseurl=http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/$releasever/$basearch/extras
#enabled=0
gpgcheck=1
[updates]
name=FreshRPMS-Updates
baseurl=http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/$releasever/$basearch/updates
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
[freshrpms]
name=FreshRPMS-Fresh
baseurl=http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/$releasever/$basearch/freshrpms
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1

/etc/yum.repos.d/newrpms.repo
------------------------------
[newrpms.sunsite.dk]
name=Fedora Core 4 i386 NewRPMS.sunsite.dk
baseurl=http://newrpms.sunsite.dk/apt/redhat/en/i386/fc4
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1

and then specified my proxy by typing
export http_proxy="http://192.168.36.204:8080/"
(this line can be added in ~/.bashrc for convinience)

Then it was so so easy,...
yum install yumex
yum install kaffeine
yum install amarok
yum install mplayer
yum install gaim-guifications

A lot of times it crashes if the servers do not respond. You can manually install the package yum is trying to download from a {repository} and place it in /var/cache/yum/{repository}/packages and it will use them directly. This is particularly useful for large packages where a download accelerator is better than using yum.

Then, I wanted to make mp3 in KDE work and its players to be able to play it. I needed to upgrade KDE 3.4.0-2 with KDE 3.4.1, that is the kdemultimedia package. I uninstalled kdemultimedia-devel because it depended on the kdemultimedia-3.4.0-2 package. I tried to install kdemultimedia-3.4.1 which was pached for playing mp3 files. I had to download kdelibs kdebase kdelibs-devel and kdebase-devel with version 3.4.1 from the Fedora Core 4 updates site to satisfy the dependencies. That worked fine after upgrading the following packages...
kdebase-3.4.1-0.fc4.1.i386.rpm
kdelibs-devel-3.4.1-0.fc4.1.i386.rpm ( downloaded from Fedora Core 4 updates )
kdebase-devel-3.4.1-0.fc4.1.i386.rpm
kdelibs-3.4.1-0.fc4.1.i386.rpm
kdemultimedia-mp3-3.4.1-0.i386.rpm << was download from some random site.

and finally...
yum install amarok-arts
and get amarok play "mp3" with the "arts" engine, which we have to change. Default is gstreamer.

Now I am just playing with it.
yum install blah
and well, most of the time it starts installing. YUM RULZ!

Finally, just want to say... its Linux... so what... its easier than you expect it to be!!

It purrs. It hums. It mesmerizes. It is ... FEDORA CORE FOUR.

How to get Fedora Core Foured!!
-------------------------------
I was stuck with my great working Fedora Core 2 when I suddenly realized that my OS is old. I need an upgrade. So I took a CD and burnt Fedora Core 4 disk 1. And I dumped the all of the isos in a folder C:\fc4 or rather /dev/hda2/fc4. Now, I booted the CD. IT CRASHED!

I looked up the internet. We need to perform a simple tweak to install FC4 on Intel based systems. So, I booted, and typed...
garbage
and pressed enter... it gave an error. Then I typed...
linux askmethod
it asked about how to install, I ordered it to install by the hard drive and specified the folders and all. The partitioning was just reformating my / of Fedora Core 2. I selected installing everything on a 15 GB / partition with 1 GB of swap space.

Wireless setup
--------------
After I installed FC4, my first task was to somehow get my wireless network working. I have a level one 802.11g card with a Atheros AR5212 chipset. I downloaded and installed
madwifi-0.9.4.12-16.rhfc4.at.i386.rpm
madwifi-kmdl-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4-0.9.4.12-16.rhfc4.at.i686.rpm
from www.atrpms.net. Then I wrote
alias ath0 ath_pci
in the /etc/modprobe.conf
and created a file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ath0 containing..
STARTMODE=hotplug
DEVICE=ath0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
WIRELESS=yes
MODE=Managed
ESSID='IIIT WLAN'
IPV6INIT=no
onBOOT=yes
USERCTL=no
PEERDNS=no
TYPE=Wireless

and then run
neat
to just select the essid and network key to make it work. Key was of the format 0xX where X was a 26 digit hexadecimal code without any other symbols. This made the network work.

Most things just work
---------------------
The browser, the KDE, the gaim messenger, the office, the games just work. So there was no need for any configuration. I just selected a good theme for KDE and also made KDE as my default desktop from Start->Preferences->Desktop Switching Tool.

Windows applications
--------------------
I had wine and cedega-4.0.1 setups. So I installed the rpms, Condition Zero worked fine with sound after I switched off the sound server arts, but the font were all messed up, am looking for a fix.

Firefox extensions
------------------
I installed some useful extensions to the perfect browser "firefox" which ships with Fedora Core 4.

Hindi Support
-------------
Just add the Hindi Keyboard layout from Control Center to be able to type in Hindi too!

DNS Resolution
--------------
/etc/resolve.conf
nameserver 192.168.36.204
this one line made linux applications take the DNS servers to resolve the URLs to be the IP address specified.

More to come..
--------------
I am still playing with it. Will write more as and when I do things...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fcsolutions.blogspot.com/2005/07/it-purrs-it-hums-it-mesmerizes-it-is.html' title='It purrs. And then it works fine.

This one is compiled "without mysql support".
I could not enable it because compiling it with a --enable-mysql option gave an error in the admin/config.pl script,
saying that @mysql_enable_FALSE@ is a malformed pattern.

Anyways, it still works very fine.

Prerequisites
-------------
amarok-1.2.2-1.src.rpm
libvorbis-1.1.0-2.i386.rpm
taglib-1.3.1-1.i386.rpm
taglib-devel-1.3.1-1.i386.rpm
libvisual-devel-0.2.0-2.i386.rpm
libvisual-0.2.0-2.i386.rpm
gstreamer-0.8.7-0.1.fc2.fr.i386.rpm
gstreamer-plugins-0.8.5-1.i386.rpm
gstreamer-devel-0.8.7-0.1.fc2.fr.i386.rpm
gstreamer-plugins-devel-0.8.5-1.i386.rpm
gstreamer-plugins-mp3-0.8.5-0.lvn.2.3.i386.rpm
libid3tag-0.15.1b-3.1.fc3.rf.i386.rpm

Steps
-----
cd /usr/src/redhat/SPECS
rpmbuild -bb amarok.spec
cd /usr/src/redhat/RPMS
rpm -hiv amarok*

Warning
-------
Please remove following packages from the system. I wanted to get the
new KDE 3.4 in my system. So, I used the steps below, and got it working. I
have noted down the sequence. Might be of help to you.

I opened www.kde.org and in the Download/Stable version section/Redhat(Unofficial packages)/Fedora Core 2/i386/RPMS
... downloaded all the RPM files in a folder.
I then copied all these files to /var/cache/yum/KDE-3.4/packages/ directory.

After that, I removed the package named below.
I looked up google.com, rpmfind.net and freshrpms.net
to install the packages under the "rpm -Uvh" section.

After that, I just run YUM. As I had already put the RPMs in the yum folder,
it installed them without waiting to download.
I did that because yum is certainly much slower that any download accelerator.
Though, some packages it did download for satisfying dependencies.
But that doesn't take much time.

Hope you don't have any problems installing it.

One more thing is that I installed kaffeine 0.6 and amarok,
which failed to work. Please tell me if they work for you.

For any queries mail to anurag_rana [AT] students [DOT] iiit [DOT] net
.... or to anurag [dot] s [dot] rana [at] gmail [dot] com.
